Swim Lessons Offered through Project I Can Swim

In partnership with the Cincinnati Recreation Commission, Councilmember Yvette Simpson is raising awareness about the importance of learning to swim, and encourages anyone who cannot swim to enroll in the CRC's "I Can Swim!" Project & Scholarship Program.

Approximately 70% of African American children, 60% of Hispanic children, and 40% of Caucasian children cannot swim. The ability to swim is an important skill – not just for fun, but for safety as well. Formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of childhood drowning by 88%.

Councilmember Simpson, a lifelong non-swimmer, is committed to learning to swim this summer. Throughout the month of July, she will be taking lessons at the Lincoln Pool and is encouraging other non-swimmers to join her. The Lincoln sessions will take place Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30PM, beginning July 7th. If this location or time is not convenient, the CRC Aquatics Division offers lessons at 21 CRC Pool locations, at a wide variety of dates and times.

Registration is available now at any participating pool. Session 2 of the "I Can Swim!" Program is 4 weeks long, and lessons last 30 to 45 minutes. Lessons are taught by American Red Cross certified instructors and tailored to accommodate all skill levels. Weekday, evening, and weekend times are available and vary by location. The program is typically $20, but because swimming is a life-saving skill, scholarships are available for anyone who cannot afford lessons. Children ages 4-17 who complete a session of swim lessons may also earn a free pool membership.
